Fonds contains photographs documenting Art Price's interest in West Coast Indigenous art; material from Marius Barbeau on a planned book on West Coast argillite carvings; extensive documentation on various commissioned sculptures and other art projects; and coverage of Art Price's family life, early career in the Volkoff Ballet, in theatre, in set design for the Army Show, his gallery shows in 1981-82, Mackenzie River, N.W.T. tour in 1954, large format photographs of various performance pieces, as well as extensive slide coverage of European and China trips. Fonds also includes photographs which depict events and activities associated with Price's wife, Dalila, who was the daughter of Marius Barbeau.
Fonds includes works of art which document Art Price's artistic career from the early 1930s to the 1980s, including Indigenous works, sculptural designs for public monuments in Ottawa and area, illustrations for various Marius Barbeau books, Army Show set designs, and many drawings by other artists, including Price's wife, Dalila.
Fonds also contains philatelic memorabilia including a "Presentation Page" containing a matched set of inscription blocks for the 1956 "Fire Prevention" stamp, designed by Art Price; a pane of 16 stamps for the same commemorative stamp issue, from the lower left corner of the sheet; and a First Day Cover for the 50 Marc Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Côté commemorative stamp, issued 14 March 1969, with a privately produced (Cole Cover) cachet.
Fonds consists of architectual drawings of design projects such as the National Museum of Civilization; National Museum of Nature, scultures, fountains or interior designs for Expo '67, the National Research Council, the National Capital Commision, the City of Ottawa, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, Canada Post, and the Ottawa Public Library. Fonds also contains drawings relating to design work for two hotels, a high school, a private developer and the Crabtree residence.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Price, Art, 1918-2008 : Art Price was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and raised on a farm near Waterford, Ontario, where his father worked as a builder and carpenter. He studied commercial art at the Western Technical School in Toronto in 1934, and then at the Ontario College of Art under Frank Carmichael, Eric Aldwinckle, George Pepper and Fred Haines. He became involved in theatre, spending a summer working with the John Holden Players, and studied ballet with Boris Volkoff, designing many stage sets for the Volkoff Canadian Ballet. In 1939, he went to New York and studied at the McDowell Fashion School.
On returning to Canada, Art Price joined the Canadian Army in 1940. During World War II, he designed sets for the Canadian Army Show and worked at the National Film Board as a set designer. He married Dalila Barbeau, daughter of the Canadian ethnologist and folklorist Marius Barbeau, and began collaborating on various projects with his father-in-law. In 1947, under Barbeau's direction, he went to British Columbia to survey Pacific Coast Indigenous art for the National Museum of Canada. During the 1950s, he illustrated a number of Barbeau's books.
Art Price settled in Ottawa after his marriage and worked as a free-lance designer for the National Film Board until 1956. He also worked as a designer and stage manager for the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. He became known for his knowledge of Indigenous art in Canada and was commissioned to produce reproductions of totem poles and other decorations for Jasper Park Lodge and the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
After being commissioned in 1958 to cast and install Ottawa's coat-of-arms in its new City Hall, Art Price developed an interest in metal casting. During the 1960s and 1970s, he produced a number of large sculptures for corporate and government clients, including "Family Group" for Prudential Assurance, Montreal; "Man Above Matter" for the Canadian National Exhibition; "Birds of Welcome" for Gander International Airport; "The Universe Is You" for the National Research Council; "Communigraph '70" for the federal Department of Public Works; and "Sails Aflame" for the Harbour Castle Hotel, Toronto. During the 1970s and 1980s he did consulting and restoration work for the National Capital Commission in Ottawa, and in the 1980s was a consultant for the new Canadian Museum of Civilization.
Art Price is a member of the Sculptors' Society of Canada, Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the American Craftsmen's Council. He won the Grand Prize in Montreal's National Fountain and Monument Competition in 1964 and was awarded a Citation for Excellence in Fine Art in Steel by the American Iron and Steel Institute in 1971.
