Fonds consists of the personal papers of William Christian Munderloh arranged in the following series: Business affairs; Imperial German consulate, Montreal; German Society of Montreal; German Library Association of Montreal; Personal correspondence; William C. The fonds conatins also records from the Heny Munderloh Estate and arranged in the series Munderloh and Company Ltd. These records include, among others: the articles of copartnership and the Letters Patent incorporating Munderloh and Company Ltd; the renewal of specific trademark of the company and the Supplementary Letters Patent.

Munderloh, William Christian, 1831-1893 : William Christian Munderloh was born in Oldenburg, Germany, in 1831. He emigrated to Canada in 1847. Through Munderloh and Company, which he founded in 1861, he became active in the shipping trade. Largely as a result of his efforts, a direct steamship route was established between Antwerp, Bremen, Hamburg and Montreal. Working in co-operation in particular with German shipping lines, Munderloh and Company became in its time one of the most important companies active in the trade between Canada and continental Europe. The company was involved in importing goods as well as encouraged emigration to Canada. In addition to his business activities, Munderloh was also active in the German community of Montreal, and served as president of the German Society of Montreal from 1873 to 1877 and 1889 to 1893. In recognition of his community activities and his business success, Munderloh was appointed Imperial German Consul for Montreal in 1871, a position he held until his death in 1893.
