Fonds consists of the papers of Sylvia Ostry, that are related to her career with Statistics Canada, as Deputy Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, and as a director of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, as well as her involvement in other organizations such as the Economic Council of Canada. Ostry, Sylvia, 1927-2020 : Sylvia (Knelman) Ostry, economist and public servant, was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1927. She obtained her B.A. (Honours Economics) from McGill University in 1948 and her M.A. in 1950. She received her Ph. D. from McGill, with residence at Cambridge, in 1954.

Dr. Ostry taught labour and manpower economics at four Canadian universities, McGill, Carleton, Sir George Williams and the University of Montreal. She was also a research officer at the University of Oxford Institute of Statistics.

In 1964, she was named assistant Director for Research in the Labour Division of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. From 1965 to 1969, she was Director of Special Manpower Studies for the Bureau. In 1969, Dr. Ostry was appointed Director, Economic Council of Canada and 1972 she was appointed Chief Statistician of Canada. In February 1975, she was appointed Deputy Minister, Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada. From 1978 to 1979, Dr. Ostry served as Chairman of the Economic Council of Canada. In 1979, she was appointed Head of the Department of Economics and Statistics for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris, France.

Upon her return to Canada in 1984, Dr. Ostry became Deputy Minister of International Trade and Coordinator, International Economic Relations. In 1985, she was Ambassador for Multilateral Trade Negotiations and the Prime Minister's personal representative at the Economic Summit.

In 1987, she received the Outstanding Achievement Award of the Government of Canada. In 1990, she became a Companion of the Order of Canada. Sylvia Ostry died on May 7, 2020.
