Fonds consists of a personal scrapbook, 1941-1943 and 1952, documenting his activities and responsibilities as Air Member for Personnel and as Air Officer Commanding, RCAF Overseas, through news clippings, telegrams, letters, photographs, obituary and biographical summaries; an Appointments Book, 1942, minuting his meetings and travels as Air Officer Commanding, RCAF Overseas; and biographical entries, magazine clippings, correspondence, and copies of service documents, 1892-1952, providing documentation of his life and service in the RCN, RNAS, RAF and RCAF.

Fonds also consists of photographs, 1942-1943, by the Royal Canadian Air Force, predominantly from one album, depicting events associated with the career of Air Marshall Harold "Gus" Edwards as Air Officer Commanding, Royal Canadian Air Force Overseas, in England and North Africa; and reproducing caricatures of Air Marshall Edwards and an unnamed air force officer.

Edwards, Harold "Gus", 1892-1952 : Harold "Gus" Edwards (1892-1952), air officer, was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, but grew up in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1915 and almost immediately transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service, where he served as a pilot with No. 3 Naval Air Wing in France. Shot down in April 1917, he was a prisoner of war until December 1918. In 1919, he saw service with the Royal Air Force in South Russia.

Edwards joined the Canadian Air Force in September 1920 and during the inter-war period held increasingly responsible administrative and operational responsibilities. Promoted to Air Commodore in February 1940, he was named Air Member for Personnel on the Air Council, the RCAF's senior personnel staff officer, and was responsible for the organization, development and direction of personnel services within the rapidly expanding force. In November 1941, he was appointed Air Officer Commanding, RCAF Overseas, where he was responsible for the organization of the RCAF in Britain, North Africa and India. He was promoted to Air Marshal in June 1942. He returned to Canada late in 1943 and retired in 1944 for health reasons.

Air Marshal Edward's Appointment Book, among the textual records of this fonds, contains information correcting and amplifying the captions of the photographs.
The photographs of the two caricatures were placed on a portrait file in the Art Acquisition and Research Section.
Acquired in 1992 from Sue Edwards, daughter of Harold "Gus" Edwards._
