The fonds also contains technical drawings of the galvanizing, PCC, and wire die processes at Stelco, as well as foreign plant layout plans and drawings.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Dove, Allan Burgess, 1909-1989 : A.B. Dove, wire engineer and metallurgist, was born in Ayr, Scotland on 9 April 1909, and came to Canada with his family in 1913. He attended Queen's University where he graduated with a BSc. in Chemical Engineering in 1932. Dove returned to work at Stelco's Canada Works in Hamilton as Plant Engineer and later as Assistant Superintendent. In 1938 he transferred to Stelco's Montreal Wire Mills as a Wire Mill Engineer. In 1940, Dove joined the Royal Canadian Engineers, rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served in various European countries. After the war he took courses in Advanced Physical Metallurgy at London University.
Returning to Canada, Dove became Superintendent of Stelco's Dominion Works in Lachine, Que. In 1952 he was asked to return to Hamilton to take charge of a development project for spiral nails. After much research and design Dove produced the Ardox spiral nail as a replacement for the common wire nail. Dove was also involved in the development of the Stelmor process for controlled cooling of wire rod emerging from the rolling mill. From 1967 to 1974 Dove was Senior Development Metallurgist of the Wire and Fastener Division of Stelco. He applied his wide knowledge of all aspects of wire; rod mills, wire drawing, pickling, galvanizing, nail making, etc. After his retirement in 1974 Dove remained a consultant to Stelco until 1980 as well as for other clients. They included Laurel Steel Products and Tree Island in Canada, large companies in the US such as Florida Wire and Steel, Price Brothers Co., Davis Walker Corp. as well as others in Mexico and Brazil. Dove remained active as a consultant until his death on 24 July 1989.
Dove was an active member of the Wire Association International where he was the first Canadian to become president, 1958-1960. He was on its Board of Directors, headed several committees plus giving numerous seminars on various aspects of wire making. His greatest contribution was the editing of the four volume Steel Wire Handbook (1967-1980) which covered all aspects of wire making. Dove was in the process producing a two volume Ferrous Wire to replace his earlier work when he died. Dove won numerous awards from the Wire Association International, the American Iron and Steel Institute and the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. He was also a member of the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Chemical Institute of Canada and the Hamilton Engineering Institute.Additional information:General note:Acquired in 1992 from Mrs. Mollie Dove of Nashville, TN.Arrangement note:Technical drawings were removed from textual files and transferred to the National Map Collection (eventually known as the Cartography, Architecture and Geomatics Section) in January 1993 (MG31-J38), a then normal procedure. This practice was abandoned before recontainerization of the plans extracted from A.B. Dove's files was effected. It was therefore decided to return the drawings to their original folders. This was done succesfully for the majority of the plans. However, existing notes were not always clear and some drawings could not be returned to their original folders, The latter are listed in a note below.Associated material note:The Hamilton Public Library has a small A.B.
