Fonds consists of correspondence, memos, and certificates documenting significant events in Smart's personal life: his birth, marriage, the death of his son and receipt of OBE medal. There are also some memos which illustrate the early development of parks in Canada.

Fonds also consists of photographs depicting the life and career of James Smart including: portraits of James Smart, his wife Kate and their children Gwendolyn, James Augustus (Gus) and Janet, and their friends, Klondike Bill and Canadian author Grey Owl; views of various activities, sites and animals at Riding Mountain National Park; and leisure activities, such as canoeing, golfing, and horse-back riding.

The fonds includes an artistic honourary scroll signed by the colleagues of James Smart who worked with him at National Parks and Historic Sites Division, Canadian Wildlife Service and the National Museum of Canada, upon his retirement from the civil service, February 28, 1953.

Fonds also contains Smart's Order of the British Empire. Work is by the Royal Mint.

Smart, James, 1888-1957 : James Smart was born 29 February 1888 in Brandon, Manitoba. He graduated from the University of New Brunswick, Department of Forestry in 1917. In February 1919, he married Katherine Amelia Stewart. James Smart was responsible for the development of a series of National Parks in Canada, including Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba, and New Brunswick National Park. He was the Controller of the Department of Mines and Resources until it was abolished in 1950 and Controller of the National Parks Branch (1941-1950) in Canada.

He was also executive commissioner of the St. Lawrence Development Commission. James Smart was made an Additional Officer of the Civil Division of the order of the British Empire in 1946. In 1950, he was named Director of the National Parks Branch, and he continued in this position until his retirement in 1953.
