Fonds consists of selections from the Dundas of Arniston manuscripts in the Scottish Record Office, microfilm reel A-1939. It includes: an autobiography of General Durham of Largo, 1774-1836 (box 24, no. 9); a diary of General James Durham, 1801-1817 (box 24, no. 14); two journals of Robert Dundas of Arniston, 1772 (box 27, no. 4); journal of Robert Dundas of Arniston, 1773? (box 27, no. 6); journal of Chief Baron Dundas, 1804-1819, including cruise on HMS Illustrious, 1804 (box 27, no. 6); travelling expenses of Chief Baron Dundas, 1804 and 1817-1818 (box 27, no. 6); journal of Red River Expedition by Captain James Dundas of the 60th Rifles, 1870 (box 27, no. 18); volumes of transcripts of letters from Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville to Robert Dundas, 1782-1811 (box 28).

Dundas family of Arniston : Robert Dundas, Lord Arniston, the younger (1713-1787), was educated at the University of Edinburgh and admitted an advocate in 1738. He was appointed solicitor-general of Scotland in 1742 and held that post through the Jacobite plots and the rising of 1745. In 1754, he was appointed lord advocate and was returned for Midlothian at the general election. While in parliament he opposed the establishment of a militia in Scotland, and, as lord advocate, was largely occupied in settling the new conditions of the highlands, and in disposing of his great patronage so as to enhance the family influence. He was appointed a commissioner of fisheries in 1755, and became lord president of the court of session in 1760.

Robert Dundas of Arniston ( 1758-1819), eldest son of Lord Arniston, succeeded Alan Wright as solicitor-general for Scotland in 1784; became lord advocate in 1789, and from 1790 to 1801 was Member of Parliament for Edinburghshire. He appeared for the Crown in the great prosecutions for sedition at Edinburgh in 1793. He was joint-clerk and keeper of the general registers for seisins and other writs in Scotland from 1799 to 1801. He was appointed chief baron of the court of exchequer in Scotland in 1801 on the resignation of Montgomery. He married in 1787 Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Dundas, first Viscount Melville.

Henry Dundas, first Viscount Melville (1742-1811), son of Robert Dundas of Arniston, was the lord president of the court of session and lord advocate in 1775. In 1777, he was appointed joint keeper of the signet for Scotland. In 1791, he was appointed secretary of state for the Home Department. From 1794 to 1801 he was secretary at war. In 1802, he was raised to the peerage by the titles of Viscount Melville and Baron Dunira. In 1804, he became the first lord of the admiralty.
