In addition, it includes photographs relating to The Trans-Canada Alliance of German Canadians and the Central Organization of Sudeten German Clubs.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Deutschkanadischer Kongress : Founded in 1984, after the Trans-Canada Alliance had lost much of its influence in the German Canadian community, the German Canadian Congress sought to represent German Canadian political and cultural interests with government as well as with non-German community organizations.
By 1993, the Congress had branches in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia in addition to some 550 member organizations across Canada. Among these were 130 churches, 100 German language schools, 20 senior citizens' homes, art associations, museums, theatres, credit unions, as well as four kinds of smaller umbrella organizations: the provincial umbrella organizations in Saskatchewan and Alberta; those of the Transylvanian Saxons, Danube Swabians, Balts, and Sudeten Germans; the German-Canadian Choir Association (Deutschkanadischer Sängerbund) with branches in Kitchener, London, Hamilton, Stratford, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, and Windsor; and the Canadian Association of German Language Schools.
German Canadian Congress membership, reflecting the diversity of the German Canadian mosaic's denominations and national origins, included Mennonites and Hutterites, Austrians and Swiss, as well as anglophone and francophone Canadians of German-speaking background.
Despite its rapid growth, the Congress had difficulty sustaining itself, primarily because of conflict within the leadership of the organization, which was exacerbated by a cut in government funding in the early 1990s. This led to a closing of the National Office in 1995. Although the Congress has essentially ceased functioning at the national level, provincial branches continue to operate in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia.Additional information:General note:Received from the head office of the German Canadian Congress, Ottawa, in 1993 and 1995, and from Elizabeth Ruge, Camrose, Alberta, in 1990.Arrangement note:Textual material is arranged in chronological order by document type.Language note:95% of material is in German.Accruals:No further accruals expected.Source:PrivateFormer archival reference no.:MG28-V160 -
