The class consists of ledgers of imports and exports for Scotland and contains annual statistical returns from the Inspector General of Imports and Exports for Scotland, 1755 to 1827. These records, presented to the Commissioners at Edinburgh, are similar in nature and purpose to the Ledgers for England (see CUST 3). The segregation of imports from exports and the tabular format used in the reports facilitates analysis of the data on ports or colonies of origin and destination, raw materials and manufactured goods traded, values, duties paid, etc. This material is located on microfilm reels B-6061 to B-6076.

An estimated 30-35% of the records in CUST 14 are Canada-related. They highlight the growth of trade and set it in an imperial context. Equally, they permit comparison of the trade from any one colony with Scotland or amongst the colonies of British North America.

A separate Board of Commissioners was established to manage the customs for Scotland after the Union with England in 1707. Provision for its merger with the English establishment was made by an Act of 1823, but the Commissioners continued to be active at Edinburgh until 1830. Trade was nonetheless subject to the Navigation Acts, including the requirements for shipping in British or "Plantation" [that is, colonial]-registered vessels.
