Fonds consists of Harrison's articles and publications, material relating to his government career and some personal correspondence; files on national and international organizations for whom Harrison did consulting work, 1960-1990; reference files on geologists, universities and Canadian organizations; photocopies of publications relating to Harrison's professional interests.

The fonds also contains photographic material depicting events and activities pertaining to James Merritt Harrison, visits to various countries by Harrison for both professional activities and personal vacations as well as individual and groups associated with the life and career of James Merritt Harrison.

Also included is a drawing of James Merritt Harrison possibly by Art Perry.

Harrison, James Merritt, 1915-1990 : James Harrison, geologist, science administrator, international consultant, was born in Regina, Sask. on 20 Sept. 1915. His family moved to Winnipeg while he was young. Harrison obtained a B.Sc. from the University of Manitoba in 1935. After a variety of jobs, he went to Queen's University where he received an M.A. (1941) and a Ph.D. (1943) in geology. Harrison joined the Geological survey of Canda (GSC) where he worked on Precambrian geology, particularly in northern Manitoba. During the early 1950s he did considerable work on the Labrador iron ore deposits. At the same time he rose rapidly in the GSC, becoming its director in 1956. Harrison helped the GSC to adopt new scientific technologies to better carry out its mission. In 1964 Harrison became Assistant Deputy Minister of Energy Mines and Resources (EMR) where he continued to have responsibility for the GSC.

By 1972 he was Senior Assistant Deputy Minister of EMR. For his work within the government he won the Professional Institute of the Public Service Gold Medal, a Federal Public Service Outstanding Achievement Award and the Order of Canada. Harrison was also president of the Geological Association of Canada (1960), Royal Society of Canada (1967) and Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (1969).

At the same time Harrison took a strong interest in international organizations becoming the first president of the International Union of Geological Sciences (1961) and president of the International Council of Scientific Unions (1966). In 1973 he took a leave of absence to become the UNESCO Assistant Director General for Science where he had responsibility for programs teaching science and engineering and the operation of scientific, engineering and technical projects in developing countries. Harrison returned briefly to EMR in 1976 but decided to become an independent consultant in fields of international development, science policy, nuclear waste disposal and northern development. He worked for numerous Canadian and international scientific and development organizations. James Harrison died as the result of an accident in July 1990.
