Fonds consists of correspondence of Cecil J. French and the Reverend W.A. McAulay, an Associate Reformed Presbyterian minister of Greenville, South Carolina, with official notices, poems and a tribute, 1916-1919.

Also included is one a portrait of Cecil John French, 1911.

French, Cecil John, 1893-1918 : Cecil John French, soldier, was born in Ridgetown, Ontario. After leaving school, he travelled to the southern United States where he was employed by the Citrus Exchange. While in Tampa, Florida, he met the Reverend W.A. McAulay, an Associate Reformed Presbyterian minister. Cecil French later spent one year at Maryville College in Tennessee and from there went to Chicago University as a medical student, with the plan of becoming a medical missionary. He returned to Canada in 1915 and enlisted with the 46th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Saskatchewan Regiment), Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served in France with the 10th and 16th Machine Gun Companies and the 4th Machine Gun Battalion. He was promoted to lieutenant in April 1917 and was awarded the Military Cross for his actions at Passchendaele in October 1917. He was killed in action October 28 at Sailly, near Cambrai.
