Fonds consists of photographic material depicting events and activities, places and individuals, associated with the service of Leading Airwoman Mary I. Buch as a member of the Women's Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force stationed at Ottawa, Ontario, Bournemouth, Hantshire, Digby, Lincshire, and Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire. The following locations are also documented: Basingstoke, Blankney, Bournemouth, Brighton, Colwyn Bay, Conway, Digby, Land's End, Lincoln, Linton-on-Ouse, Llandudno, London, Metheringham, Mousehole, Ottawa, St. Ives.

Textual material consists of approximately 200 letters, cards, airgraphs, and telegrams addressed by L.A.W. Mary Hawkins, later Buch, RCAF (WD), to Marion Strang, Dean of the Women's Residence at Macdonald College, Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Quebec. These date from 21 February 1943 through 5 July 1945, and detail the daily activities of the writer with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Women's Division) on the Home Front and in England. Several include news clippings relevant to the contents of themletters. A small number of the letters show cuts and deletions as a result of wartime censorship and more recent attempts by the writer to edit their contents. A typescript note provides biographical details of many of the individuals named in letters.

Buch, Mary Hawkins, 1922- : Mary I. Buch, née Hawkins, airwoman, was educated at The High School for Girls, Montreal, and at the School for Teachers at Macdonald College, Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Quebec. In February 1943, she enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Women's Division). Following basic training and the completion of the Clerk Operations Course at Rockcliffe, Ontario, she was posted to Eastern Air Command, serving at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Trained at Dartmouth to fulfil the duties of "Ops. B" (a senior flying control position occupied by a commissioned WAAF or WD in the Operations Room), she was awaiting posting to Toronto for Officers' Training, when in November 1943 she was posted overseas. From December 1943 through January 1944, she was stationed at the RCAF Depot at Bournemouth, England, awaiting operational posting. In January 1944, she married George E. Buch, a lieutenant with The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada. In February 1944, she was posted as Clerk Operations to the fighter station at Digby, Lincolnshire. During the summer of 1944, she transferred to the 6 Group bomber station at Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire. There she re-mustered via trade tests to Map Clerk, responsible for cataloguing, filing and supplying maps, although the RCAF had no such trade. She was discharged as a Leading Airwoman at Rockcliffe in August 1945, following her return to Canada at the completion of the war in Europe.
