The majority of correspondence in this fonds was written by Sydney Fisher and is a valuable, though informal, record of his role as the Minister of Agriculture from 1896 to 1911, his travels and his impressions of the various countries and cities that he visited, and his relationship with various family members. The subject files, arranged alphabetically, document the ongoing financial activities of various members of the Fisher family and other general subjects of social relevance. The fonds comprises four series of correspondence, entitled Susanna (Corse) Fisher Series (vols. 1-3), Miss E.L. Fisher Series (vol. 3), Roswell Fisher Series (vol. 3) and Sydney Arthur Fisher Series (vol. 3). The titles infer that correspondence is written to the person named in the series title. The fonds also contains a drawing depicting a portrait of Sydney A. Fisher.

Fisher, Sydney, 1850-1921 : The Honourable Sydney Arthur Fisher was born in Montreal on June 12 to Dr. Arthur Fisher and Susanna (Corse) Fisher. He attended McGill University and Trinity College, Cambridge and remained unmarried. Fisher was a successful farmer, and was President of the Ensilage and Stock Feeding Association as well as the Quebec Fruit Growers' Association. He was a founding member of the Montreal Art Gallery.

Fisher began his political career on 18 October 1880, with a defeat in a by-election for Brome, P.Q., but was elected in this riding in 1882 and again in 1887. He faced defeat in 1891, but was re-elected for Brome in 1896, at a by-election on 30 July 1896, and in 1900, 1904 and 1908. Fisher was defeated in 1911.

Fisher was the Minister of Agriculture from 13 July 1896 until 6 October 1911.

Fisher died on April 9 at Ottawa, Ontario.
