11 maps.Langue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Fonds consists of textual records relating to Zacks' major interests: his role as a leader of Canadian Jewry and the Zionist movement in the 1940's and his contribution to the Visual Arts in Canada as a collector and philanthropist.
Fonds also contains graphic and cartographic materials. 26 photographs, 1944-1960, depicting activities of Mr. Zacks in Toronto, Ont.; Zionist Order Habonim Eastern Region Conference, Montreal, Quebec, 1946; University Golden Gaels football team, Kingston, Ont., 1956; portrait by Leatherdale. 32 photographs, 1943-1970, depict S.J. Zacks at various meetings and dinners, and with various personalities such as Abba Eban, Golda Meir, and Menachim Begin. One drawing, 1946, is a portrait of Samuel J. Zacks. 11 maps and plans, 1951-1955, consist of some that pertain to mining areas in Ontario and Manitoba; and others showing oil and gas fields in Western Canada, dated 1951.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Zacks, Sam, 1904-1970 : Samuel Jacob Zacks, business man and philanthropist, was born in Kingston, Ontario and educated at Queen's University receiving a B.A. in 1924. After post-graduate work in Political Economy at Harvard, he went to Toronto where he wrote a foreign exchange column for the Financial Post, 1925-1927. Shortly thereafter he entered the stock brokerage business specializing in gold mining shares. From 1936 to 1945 he helped finance and bring into production several gold mines in Northern Ontario including Leitch Gold Mines in the Red Lake area.
Sam Zacks was one of the leading national figures in the Jewish community. He helped found the United Jewish Welfare Fund of Toronto in 1938, played an active role on the executive of the Canadian National Committee on Refugees which helped reestablish 3,000 German-Jewish refugees before and during World War II and from 1943-1949 he served two terms as National President of the Zionist Organization of Canada. He was one of the 18 members (the only Canadian) of the Sonneborn Institute which supported the Haganah and procured funds at the time of the creation of the State of Israel. He helped establish the Canada-Palestine Committee under the chairmanship of Sir Elsworth Flavelle and was one of the founders of the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University and the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rechovot, Israel.
In the Arts, Sam Zacks and his wife were founding members of the Arts Gallery of Ontario. He was chairman of its Exhibition Committee, 1962-1966, the Henry Moore Sculpture Centre Committee, 1969-1970, and Honourary Vice-President of the Board of Trustees, 1968-1970. In 1966 Mr. Zacks was elected president and Chairman of the Board of the A.G.O. for a two year term. In 1963 he donated to Queen's University a large collection of Canadian paintings, sculpture and Eskimo Art which formed the basis of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre. He made numerous other gifts from his valuable collection to other galleries and museums throughout the world. He was a Board member of the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and a member of its programme committee 1961-1970. In 1964 he and his wife were responsible for the building of an archeology sites museum at Hazor, which displays artifacts from King Solomon's summer palace.
