Lysons, Horace, 1917-1978 : Electronics engineer

Horace Lysons was born in Great Britain on 9 August 1917. He attended Manchester College of Technology 1936-1939 where he graduated with honours in the field of electrical engineering. He worked as an apprentice with the firms Metropolitan-Vickers, Manchester Corp. and Ferguson-Pailin Ltd. before becoming a technical officer in 1942 with the Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) in Great Malvern, Worcester. From 1946 to 1956 he was senior scientific officer with the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE) in Harewell, England.

In 1956 Lysons came to Canada to work for the Defence Research Board (DRB) where he became Head of Defence Industrial Research (Electronics) covering lasers, plasma, communications, sonar displays, microelectronics and semiconductors. Lysons also collaborated in similar programs with the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce and the U.S. Air Force. He also became the Secretary of DRB University Grants in 1963. In 1973 he went to the National Research Council as a Research Officer, Industrial Research Assistance Program covering the fields of electronics and telecommunications. Lysons died as a result of a car accident on 25 December 1978.
