Fonds consists of the prisoner of war diary of Private Martin Gibson, Essex Scottish Regiment, recording his experiences at Stalag IXC from July 1944. Sporadically kept, the diary includes details of camp life until liberation in May 1945, with earlier references to his enlistment, training, capture and hospitalization entered. Included in the diary are the addresses of the next of kin of other prisoners, a German medical card recording particulars of Martin Gibson, and several photographs showing camp inmates and family members, these latter received while a prisoner of war, and a post-war photograph of a veterans' ceremony attended by Martin Gibson.

Gibson, Martin, 1912- : Martin Gibson, soldier, enlisted with the Essex Scottish Regiment in July 1940. As a private with that unit, he took part in the ill-fated Dieppe Raid of August 1942. Wounded and captured following the raid, he spent nine months in a German hospital before being sent to Stalag IXC, near Vacha, Germany, where he remained as a prisoner of war until liberated by American forces in May 1945.
