Fonds consists of architectural drawings pertaining to several areas of architecture: master planning for urban renewal and land use; private sector, including commercial, educational and religious facilities and residential houses; government projects at the federal, provincial and municipal levels; some international projects. There are also architectural projects, of industrial complexes primarily in Hamilton and southwestern Ontario.

The fonds contains photographs of external and internal views, demolition and construction progress photographs, and perspective drawings of factories, office buildings, hospitals, schools, churches, apartment buildings, and hotels in cities and towns in Canada and the United States.

Also included are records of a succession of architectural firms with offices in Hamilton, Toronto and Calgary. Most of the material consists of files on the various projects undertaken by the firms; there is also a small amount of financial and public relations material.

Norman Dobell Associates : The firm was founded in 1910 in Hamilton, Ontario, under the name Prack & Perrine, by Bernard H. Prack of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A branch office was established in Toronto shortly afterwards, and in 1917 the name was changed to Bernard H. Prack, Industrial Architect and Engineer. By 1919, there were offices in Hamilton, Toronto and Pittsburgh, under the direction of Prack's brothers Fred, Arthur and Walter respectively. By 1931, Bernard had returned to the United States, leaving Fred and Ben Prack to carry on the work in Hamilton, and the firm was renamed Prack & Prack. Fred's son Alvin joined the firm in 1936. By 1972, Alvin, then head of the firm, had taken on as partners S.J. Cauley, M.R. Dabner, N.W. Dobell and D.R. Tyrell, and the firm was renamed Prack Partners in that year.

Norman Wallace Dobell joined Prack & Prack in Hamilton in 1963, and he assumed the principal partnership of the firm in 1972. In 1977, the last remaining Prack having left the firm, he renamed it Norman Dobell Associates, Architects. In 1978, he moved the firm to Calgary under the name Norman Dobell Architect Limited. In 1983, he joined with Christopher Wright to form the firm Wright Dobell Architects Limited (1983-1991), but in 1991 he created his own firm under the name Norman Dobell Associates (1991-1995).
