Fonds consists of microfilmed selections of the records of the Royal Philanthropic Society's Farm School, Redhill, Surrey, for the period 1848 to 1871. The published annual reports include the rules of admission, reports of the activities of the society, numbers of boys and general information about their welfare. Included are letters from boys who emigrated to Canada and elsewhere, without, however, revealing their identity or location. This material is located on microfilm reel A-2082.

Royal Philanthropic Society's Farm School : The Royal Philanthropic Society began in 1788 by placing one child out to nurse. By 1792, several groups of children were being cared for and trained by craftsmen and their wives. The Society was incorporated in 1806. Founded by a group of gentlemen concerned by the large number of homeless children in the city who could earn their living only through begging or crime the Society's act of incorporation defined its focus as being the children of convicted felons or children who had themselves been convicted of criminal practices. Essentially a school of industry, its residents were chiefly employed in farm and garden labour.

Associated material note:

An emigration letterbook, 1857-1874, of the Royal Philanthropic Society is only available in the Surrey Record Office. It contains material related to Canada West, the Red River settlement and New Brunswick and contains a list of boys sent to Canada in 1866.
