Fonds consists of selections of records relating to the 4th Earl of Onslow and to the 5th Earl of Onslow. Records of the 4th Earl, 1883-1905, relate to colonial conferences and colonial affairs and consist mostly of correspondence on such matters as the Alaska boundary and Anglo-American relations. Also included is a journal of travels in America, 1883-1884. Records of the 5th Earl, 1904 to 1912 and 1914 to 1919, relate to Canadian affairs of the period including English and French Canadian relations. Included is a folder of documents relating to the Union Trust of Canada, of which the 5th Earl was a director. This material is located on microfilm reel A-2082.

Earl of Onslow : The Hillier family, Earls of Onslow, originally from Shropshire, became established in Surrey with the marriage of Richard Onslow, M.P., to Catherine Harding of Cranleigh. William Hillier Onslow, (1853-1911), the 4th Earl of Onslow, served as Under Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1887 and from 1900-1903. Richard, 5th Earl of Onslow, held various posts in the Diplomatic Services from 1901 to 1909. In 1909, he joined the Foreign Office as Assistant Private Secretary to Sir Edward Grey. From 1924 to 1928, he was Under Secretary for War.
