Canadian Commission for the International Year of the Child : On December 21, 1976, the United Nations National General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 1979 the International Year of the Child (IYC). In that same year, the Canadian Council on Children and Youth together with UNESCO established an International Year of the Child Committee for the purposes of setting up a Canadian Commission for the International Year of the Child (CCIYC). On September 1, 1978, the CCIYC was formally established to coordinate Canadian activities related to the United Nations' International Year of the Child. Health and Welfare Canada was designated as the department responsible for the CCIYC in Canada, and Judge Doris Ogilvie of Fredericton, N.B., was appointed chairperson.
The Commission was composed of 44 members from across Canada appointed by the federal government, provincial (except Quebec) and territorial governments; Health and Welfare Canada; the Canadian Committee for IYC; and representatives of business, labour, churches and child-interest groups and other non-governmental organizations.
