Series consists of files of the Education Department documenting the CLC's activities in developing, promoting, and delivering labour education programmes. Major topics include seminars and schools offered by the CLC, its affiliated unions, and provincial federations; the Labour College of Canada and its Board of Governors; instructor training; the National Education Advisory Committee, and other CLC standing committees; the education activities of international and foreign labour bodies, including the International Labour Organisation and International Confederation of Free Trade Unions seminars delivered in Banff, Alberta; assistance to labour education programmes in other countries, including programmes organized under the Colombo Plan; relations with other organizations with an interest in labour and adult education, such as the Canadian Association for Adult Education and Frontier College; vocational and technical training, apprenticeship, and the National Technical and Vocational Training Advisory Council; the development and diffusion of education materials, such as films; labour education in universities and colleges; bursaries, fellowships, and other awards; correspondence and reports of CLC regional directors of education; inter-office correspondence; and general administrative matters. The files contain correspondence, reports, minutes, lists of students, course outlines and materials, brochures and other course publicity, educational manuals, posters, student essays, print matter, and other materials. Includes some files of the Canadian Congress of Labour's Labour Education Committee.

Canadian Labour Congress. Education Dept : The Education Department was established at the CLC's founding in 1956. It was responsible for developing, promoting, and co-ordinating labour education programmes for CLC members. Working with local labour councils, provincial federations of labour, and affiliated unions, the Education Department offered a range of courses, such as weekend labour institutes, longer summer and winter schools, and staff conferences and seminars, on a variety of topics such as grievance procedure, collective bargaining, steward training, occupational health and safety, and local union administration. The department was also responsible for the creation and publication of instructional manuals and teaching materials, and it also provided educational assistance during organizing campaigns. The national director was assisted by regional directors of education, who (working out of the CLC's regional offices) sought to develop labour education programmes in their areas. The Education Department was also responsible for liaison with the Labour College of Canada and with the Labour Education and Studies Centre, established by the CLC with federal funding in 1977. Max Swerdlow served as the CLC's first national director of education, 1956-1968. He was succeeded by A.L. Hepworth (1968-1975), Larry Wagg (1975-1981), Jim Brechin (1981-ca. 1985), and Noel Stoodley (from ca. 1985). In 1983, the Education Department and the Labour Education and Studies Centre merged to form Educational Services. In the 1990s, Educational Services and its functions were merged with the Organization Department to form the Organization and Educational Services Department.
