Series consists of research files created by Harper on historical and contemporary artists and on various subjects relating to art. The files contain Harper's notes and manuscripts of his own writings on artists and art, correspondence from artists and their descendants, copies of archival documentation, exhibition notices and catalogues, correspondence with private collectors, public galleries and dealers, reproductions of works, clippings, and other material. There is considerable overlap between this series and the correspondence series and specific projects series. Note that material dating from after Harper's death was added to the files by his widow.

Loose material found among the papers relating to historical and contemporary artists and to various subjects relating to art but not filed by Harper has been filed in a parallel series II.

Included in horizontal storage: posters of various studios and galleries; Terence Shortt's "The Painted Bird". All items are in container 65.
