The series consists of the files of the Aid to Scholarly Publications Programme for manuscripts in the humanities which were submitted for consideration for grants in aid of publication. It includes files for manuscripts that were approved and paid a subsidy as well as files for those that were rejected by the Aid to Scholarly Publications Committee, deemed ineligible, withdrawn by the applicant, or revised for re-submission. The files generally contain the readers' reports (upon which decisions were based), the authors' replies to these reports, the decisions of the committee, and correspondence with authors, publishers and readers. The manuscripts themselves are not included in the files although occasionally an outline may be found.

In addition to the manuscript files, there are some general files pertaining to policies and procedures for grants in aid of publication.

About 30 to 40 per cent of the files are for book manuscripts written in French.
