The series consists of the files of the Aid to Scholarly Publications Programme for manuscripts which were submitted for consideration for grants in aid of publication. It includes files for manuscripts that were approved and paid a subsidy as well as files for those that were rejected by the Aid to Scholarly Publications Committee, deemed ineligible, withdrawn by the applicant, or revised for re-submission. The files generally contain the readers' reports (upon which decisions were based), the authors' replies to these reports, the decisions of the committee, and correspondence with authors, publishers, and readers. The manuscripts themselves are not included in the files although sometimes a précis may be found.

The series also contains, in addition to the manuscript files, general correspondence pertaining to the Aid to Scholarly Publications Programme, policy and budget documents, annual reports, and files relating to the ASPP book prizes, Nielsen Task Force, Park Report, McNeill Report, and other studies.

Language note:
