Series consists of documents relating to Dutch participation in and influence on the fur trade and cod fisheries of North America, 1582-1786. Volumes 1-8 were copied from notarial records in the Gemeente Archief, Amsterdam and various other notarial archives in Holland. Volumes 9-10, 13 and 16-18 include material from French archives and serve to illustrate the interrelationships between French and Dutch merchants active in the fur trade. Volumes 11-12, 14-15, and 17 relate to Dutch trade with New York (New Netherlands) and Quebec.

General note:

Transcriptions of the original Dutch text and modern English translations are interfiled throughout the collection. Items in French are transcribed but not translated. Each volume is prefaced with a table of contents and concludes with an index, copies of which are also available in finding aid no. 740.
