This series contains material related to Stursberg's books on John Diefenbaker's tenure as Prime Minister and leader of the Progressive Conservative party: "Diefenbaker: Leadership Gained, 1956-1962" (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1975) and "Diefenbaker: Leadership Lost, 1962-1967" (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1976). The bulk of the series consists of transcripts of interviews with Diefenbaker, most of his cabinet ministers, and other leading politicians of the era such as Robert Stanfield, Paul Martin, Jack Pickersgill, Judy LaMarsh, Tommy Douglas, David Lewis, and Réal Caouette. The interviews with Diefenbaker were not used in the books in order to avoid a potential conflict with the publisher of Diefenbaker's memoirs, in preparation at the same time.

Series includes other material includes chapter drafts with "cut and paste" excerpts of interview transcripts, a photocopy of a typescript and page proofs of "Leadership Gained", clippings from election campaigns, and a sample chapter with criticism from University of Toronto Press.

Oversize material has been placed in volume 39.
