These letters include information on all aspects of life onboard ship from actions with enemy vessels to promotions and desertion. The letters are arranged alphabetically by officers' surnames and then chronologically. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels B-292, B-2605 to B-2635, B-2786 to B-2804, B-2918 to B-2920, B-2937 to B-2942. Transcripts are available on microfilm reel C-12856.
A nominal index for the Captains' letters is available on microfilm reels B-2987 (A-H), B-2988 (I-P), B-2989 (Q-S), B-2990 (T-Y). Each entry of this index includes the ADM 1 volume number, ship, subject, and date of each captain's letter microfilmed for the National Archives.
