Sheriffs were required to make montly or quarterly returns of the prisoners in the gaols to the Civil Secretary. Most surviving returns have been segregated from the general series of correspondence (RG 4 A 1) to form series RG 4 B 20. Found with these gaol calendars are some Calendars of Convictions from the Court of King's Bench and the Court of Oyer and Terminer, as well as some statistical returns provided for the Provincial Secretary to use in compiling the Blue Books of Statistics (see RG 1, E 13). Calendars of convictions are also found with the pardon applications in B 20 or the general correspondence in A 1.

Post-1841 returns have been reintegrated with the Provincial Secretary's numbered correspondence files (RG 4, C 1). Reintegration of misfiled items within series A 1, B 20 and B 21 is under investigation.
