The series consists of notebooks and diaries kept by Alma Duncan. There are three journals, 1939-1944, which include records of Duncan's paintings during the period, some financial notes, notes on a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, notes kept during workshops and talks at the Conference of Canadian Artists in Kingston, notes on painting and printing techniques, and notes on art in general. There are several later notebooks on art, including ones of teaching notes kept while she was teaching in the 1960s. A notebook dated 1963-1969 includes records of her artworks, recording exhibitions and sales.

There is a notebook kept during Duncan's years with the National Film Board, titled "The Animated Film" and containing notes on technical aspects of making films, including puppetry, special effects and camera work, reflecting European influences; the notebook also contains notes on some NFB animated films.

The series includes a diary Duncan kept on a trip to Europe with Audrey McLaren in 1951, recording their Atlantic crossing, her reactions to Paris, and their travels in France, Italy, Switzerland and England, and visits to art museums and architectural sites.

There is a pocket notebook kept while Duncan was in the Arctic in 1975 (see also Personal material and memorabilia series) and more general notebooks kept during the 1980s and 1990s, containing addresses, notes on current projects, philosophical notes, biographical notes, notes on reading, etc.
