Series consists of the surviving files of the Administration Central Registry and relate to almost all aspects of National Defence. With a few exceptions (notably file 2-70-159-1: Defence Council agenda and minutes, which begins in 1924), they were created between 1945 and unification of the armed services into the Canadian Forces in 1966. There are numerous files relating to NATO and other international defence organizations, to the many tri-service committees active during the period, to the Middle East Crisis of 1967 and to Canadian involvement in the International Control and Supervision Commission in Southeast Asia.

Series includes an illustrated poster produced by the Bureau of Current Affairs in 1957; it explains the role and responsibilities of the Governor General of Canada.

Canada. Dept. of National Defence. Administration Central Registry : In 1950 National Defence Headquarters physically consolidated all the records operations under one organization, the Directorate of Central Registries. The three armed services and the Defence Research Board, maintained their own central registries within this structure, but a new registry was added to cover the administrative and operational activities that concerned all of the department. In effect, the Administration Central Registry were the records of Deputy Minister of National Defence, who was responsible for overall departmental administration, which included the continuing review of, and control over, the financial aspects of operations, logistics, personnel and administration.
