Series also consists of one photographic album of photographs documenting the air mail and postal service operated by Commercial Airways Ltd. from Fort McMurray, Alberta to Aklavik, N.W.T., along the Mackenzie River (see file-level description, MIKAN 157653, for more information and for lower-level descriptions).Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Canada. Postmaster General : Until 1851, the Post Office in Canada was an adjunct to the General Post Office (GPO) of Great Britain. British postal authorities resisted demands for provincial control for several decades, but after Lord Durham's recommendations in 1839 and a change of colonial policy on the part of the British in the late 1840s, the postal service was finally turned over to the Canadian provinces. On April 5, 1851, James Morris became Canada's first Postmaster General. The new Postmaster General and his successors may take large credit for the settlement of Canada by virtue of the extension of postal service. In addition to extending service, the Postmaster General was responsible for the establishment of postal regulations and the implementation of uniform internal rates. Unfortunately, few records covering the first two decades of Canadian administration have survived. Researchers must rely on Sessional Papers and Annual Reports for an assessment of the Post Office during the early years of operation.
