From its inception -- and the inception of its sister department, the Secretary of State for the Provinces -- the Secretary of State was responsible for correspondence between the federal and provincial governments and essentially acted as the communications liaison between governments and between federal government departments. Several activities related to interdepartmental communication and coordination developed including, but not limited to: the compilation of Parliamentary returns; printing; translation; and other government coordination activities.
