Sub-series consists of letter books of despatches received by the Governor from the Colonial Office and from other departments of the British government such as the War Office and the Commissioners of Customs. The collection includes numbered, unnumbered, circular, military and private despatches. With some exceptions enclosures are not usually included. This series was discontinued in 1855-1856 due to a shortage of staff in the Governor-in-Chief's Office. The report of the Civil Service Commission in 1869 recommended the resumption of the practice of copying in-coming despatches on the grounds that "... the original despatches are often called for at meetings of Council or by individual Ministers and it sometimes happens that they are mislaid and if wanted afterward cannot be found", but despite this recommendation it appears that the practice was not resumed. Although entry books containing the texts of despatches are found for Lower Canada, 1793-1838, and the Province of Canada, 1841-1855, only abstracts of the despatches are available in this sub-series for Upper Canada, 1828-1839.
