Canada. Superintendent General of Indian Affairs (1867-1937) : Under Section 91(24) of The Constitution Act, 1867, the federal government was given jurisdiction for "Indians and lands reserved for the Indians". The office of Superintendent General of Indian Affairs was created by statute in 1868 (31 Vict., c.42, assented to 22 May 1868). From that date the Minister responsible for Indian Affairs carried the title Superintendent General of Indian Affairs (SGIA), until 1936 when the position was abolished. The position of SGIA was held initially by the Secretary of State of Canada. In 1869 the powers and duties of the SGIA were transferred to the Secretary of State for the Provinces. With the abolition of the post of Secretary of State for the Provinces and the creation of the position of Minister of the Interior in 1873, that Minister was made ex officio Superintendent General of Indian Affairs. The Department of Indian Affairs was created by statute in 1880. Although this legislation conferred departmental status, the Minister of Interior continued to hold the office of SGIA ex officio. Legislation passed in May 1883 provided for the Minister of Interior, or any other Minister so appointed by the Governor in Council, to hold the office of SGIA ex officio. The President of the Privy Council was designated SGIA in October 1883. The office was returned to the Minister of Interior in 1887 and remained with him until 1936, but for a brief period in 1930 when it was held by the Minister of Immigration and Colonization. The office of Superintendent General of Indian Affairs was abolished in 1936 when the Department of Indian Affairs was reduced to Branch status within the Department of Mines and Resources.
