Canada. Canadian Forces Station (Lowther, Ont.) : The Lowther radar station was built in 1957 at Kapuskasing, Ontario, by the United States Air Force and housed the 639th USAF Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. The site was integrated into the SAGE control system in March 1963 and the equipment of the 639th was turned over to the RCAF on 1 July 1963 and renamed as 36 Radar Squadron. It was the last of eleven Pinetree radar sites built on Canadian soil to pass from American to Canadian control. On 10 August 1967 36 Radar Squadron was redesignated as CFS Lowther where, along with CFS Sioux Lookout and CFS Falconbridge, it was to provide 23rd NORAD Region (formed in November 1969 with the amalgamation of 34 and 29 NORAD Divisions) with Search and Height Radar coverage for the air space north of the Great Lakes. Lowther was part of Air Defence Command but operationally tasked to 23rd NORAD Region, where it was electronically linked to the 23rd NORAD Region Control Centre in Duluth, Minnesota, USA. Its secondary mission was to provide ground search and rescue operations and aid to the civil power. With Canadian Forces Organizational Order 2.35, dated 27 October 1969, CFS Lowther fell under the operational control of Northern NORAD Region and the Commander 29th NORAD Division. On 2 September 1975 the station was transferred to Air Defence Group. CFS Lowther was disbanded on 1 August 1987. RG 24 General Inventory
