Sub-series consists of ship registration records compiled by the Registrar of Shipping in Quebec City, and includes first registers, registers of subsequent transactions and mortgage registers. The registers contain information describing the type, size, dimension and means of propulsion for each vessel registered at this port as well as ownership details and ultimate disposition. The records in this sub-series include directives, letterbooks of outgoing correspondence, and registers of vessels arriving at and leaving from the port of Quebec City (RG42,Vols. 737- 965, 1035). Letterbooks for the years 1879-1893 and 1897-1925 are available on microfilm.

The sub-series also contains files on individual vessels which were closed-out prior to 1965. Each file contains correspondence, memoranda, vessel registration papers and related documents (RG12, Vols. 2971-2978). Also included are two registry books, one containing the registration records for vessels registered at Quebec City between 1916 and 1920, and another recording transactions on vessels registered at the port (RG12, Vols. 3087-3088; reel T-12335).

Registrar of Shipping (Quebec, Quebec) : The Registrar of Shipping in Quebec City documented the ownership of small vessels and ships by compiling, tracking and administering transfers in vessel ownership, the changing of names, marine mortgages, and ship's Certificates of Registry (Blue Books).
