The fonds consists of records relating to the Eastern Arctic Patrol mails. The documentation includes postal covers, research notes, manuscripts, articles, and copied postmarks for Eastern Arctic mails and the R.M.S. Nascopie. Myles, Gordon, 1936-1996 : Sydney Gordon Myles was born March 15, 1936 in Grand Bruit Newfoundland. In 1950 the Myles family moved to Sudbury, Ontario, where he completed his high school education. He then attended Victoria College at the University of Toronto from 1956 to 1959, majoring in history and graduated with a Master of Library Science degree. Mr. Myles' hobby in stamp collecting began when he was six years old. He became interested in Eastern Arctic (Hudson Bay) mail routes as a result of a summer job, working in the Canadian Arctic on the DEW line. He researched the R.M.S. Nascopie, wrote manuscripts and collected philatelic covers carried by the Nascopie. Although it is unknown if he ever displayed his collection at philatelic exhibitions or shows he did attend many of them. In 1979, Mr. Myles sold most of his stamp collection, but retained some postal covers. He discontinued his studies of Eastern Arctic mails when he developed another hobby, genealogy. For sixteen years he gathered information on the Myles, Billards, the extended families of Newfoundland, and wrote articles about the communities of the Southwest Coast. He was a lifetime member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Genealogical Society and several of his manuscripts have been published by the organization. All of his genealogical records are housed by the Society's archives. Mr. Gordon Myles manuscripts on Eastern Arctic mails were not completed as a result of his death in an automobile accident in 1996. Biographical information from Gloria Myles.
