18 x-ray film sheets 14 x 18 inches.Language of material:no languageScope and content:Sub-series consists of selected files relating to claims made against the Crown including flooding caused to private property by construction on canals; claims made against the Crown for forfeitures of goods under the Customs Act; claims made against the Crown arising out of death or injury to persons or property resulting from the negligence of an officer or servant of the Crown; claims cases arising from seizures of Canadian fishing vessels and collections of securities from an estate, as well as files relating to Crown Prosecutors, their fees and expenses. The files consist of correspondence, memoranda, legal documents such as Minutes of Judgement and Petitions of Right, printed circulars, invoices and expense sheets from Justice officials, other departmental personnel and private law firms.
There are two broad areas of litigation in the Department. The first is tax law, and the second civil litigation, which covers anything that is not tax law or criminal law (e.g. immigration, Aboriginal law, administrative law). Tax litigators are responsible for all civil appeals concerning tax and customs legislation as well as certain appeals under the Canada Pension Plan, the Employment Insurance Act, and the Petroleum and Gas Revenue Tax Act. They are responsible for conducting litigation on behalf of the Canada Customs Revenue Agency.
