Series consists of files created by the Director of the Mines Branch and later by the office of the Deputy Minister. They reflect the activities of the former Department of Mines, the Department of Mines and Resources and the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys.

The records relate to a great many topics including administration of the strategic minerals and petroliferous projects conducted during the World War II, documents relative to Wartime Oils Limited, reports and correspondence on the bituminous sands of Alberta and Abasand Oils Limited, the Department's involvement in the various mining committees of the Imperial Institute, civil service regulations and inquiries, various royal commissions on energy matters, the Petroleum Planning Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), financial and administrative matters related to departmental legislation, the Canadian Corporation for the World Exhibition, the Royal Commission on Pilotage, the Colombo Plan, the Arctic Institute of North America, the Atomic Energy Advisory Panel, the Science Council of Canada, the Glassco Commission on Government Organization and a number of other committees, boards, institutes, commissions, and projects in which the various departments had an interest.

No further accruals are expected. Additional executive records originating in the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys were subsequently maintained by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.
