Series consists of central registry files of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada containing official records of the department relating to its chief functions and activities. The files are maintained in a block numeric system with main blocks devoted to various administrative and operational subjects. Among the administrative subjects are blocks devoted to administration, associations, finance, general services, property and building management, personnel management, information services and materiel management. The operational category covers a wide range of subjects relating to the operational responsibility of the department and includes files created or received by Energy, Mines and Resources while carrying out its basic functions.

The majority of records in this series pertain to the meetings of various committees, conferences, task forces, and panels. Files for most internal committees and advisory committees were maintained in the 1135-, 1138-, or 1139- record series; most files for external international or national meetings, such as federal-provincial conferences, were maintained in the 1165- series.
