Canada. Office of Energy Research and Development : On 15 January 1974, an interdepartmental Task Force on Energy Research and Development (ERD) was established. Its mandate was to develop, implement and co-ordinate a program of federal energy research and development. While the task force reported to the Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources a separate office was created within EMR to serve as its secretariat. The office also acted as primary contact point with the Ministry of State for Economic Development and the Treasury Board. In May 1975 the Task Force was converted into the Panel on Energy Research and Development. This new organization was still supported by the ERD Office, and was subsequently established to allocate R&D funding.

The federal contribution to the fund, 13 million in 1974 and 60 million in 1980, was coordinated by both the Panel and the Office. As well as distributing funds there were "Tasks" assigned to the program. These tasks were identified as; reduce consumption of energy and/or increase efficiency, increase domestic non-renewable energy production, substitute other energy sources for oil and gas, develop nuclear fuel resource capability, exploit natural resources and improve transportation of energy commodities and electrical transmission systems. The OERD also supported studies in Canadian provincial and university energy R&D projects, in the United States, as well as contributing to collaborative research projects with other countries.
