Series consists of records organized in both a straight numeric file system and by sectional sheet number, containing information on the origin of place names in Canada and decisions made by the Board concerning official names. While the series was created when the organization was known as the Geographic Board of Canada, information continued to be added to some files up to the 1970's.

Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names : The first organization established to control geographical names in Canada was created by Order in Council P.C. 3329 of 18 December 1897, and was called the Geographic Board of Canada. It became the Canadian Board on Geographical Names in 1948 and the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (CPCGN) in 1961, at which time the responsibility for naming was transferred to the provinces. Since 1979, the authority for naming in Indian reserves, national parks, and military reserves has been jointly held by the appropriate federal department and the province concerned. In 1984, Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories assumed responsibility for the names in their own jurisdictions. The Committee, consisting of federal and provincial representatives, deals with all questions of geographical nomenclature affecting Canada and undertakes research and investigation into the origin and usage of geographical names. Supported by a Secretariat within the Surveys, Mapping and Remote Sensing Sector of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, the Committee reports to the Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources.
