Series consists of central registry files created and/or maintained by the Employment Relations and Conditions of Work Branch and its predecessors. Volumes 1991-2002, 3797-3804 contain records that reflect the general work of the branch and its predecessor elements, and relate to investigations of complaints made under the pertinent legislation carried out by the Ottawa district office in eastern and northern Ontario between 1965 and 1983. About one half of these records deal with complaints arising in the banking industry. Other records relate principally to Branch work in staging union-management conferences and to the Branch's correspondence with a number of organizations in Canada, or to reports, rulings and interpretations reflecting a broad cross-section of concerns arising out of the Canada Labour Code.

Volumes 4108-4135 contain files that consist almost entirely of records relating to labour-management committees, many of which were set up originally with the assistance of Labour Canada staff. Included are minutes of committee meetings, reports of visits to employers by staff members of the Branch and related correspondence. Files are organized under the name of the employer. Some files were created at the Western Regional Office in Winnipeg beginning in 1945. In 1971 these files were transferred to the new regional office in Edmonton and ultimately to the Mountain Region office in Vancouver. They consist of regular reports from the field representative, copies of minutes of the committees, occasionally union-labour contracts, and some correspondence.

Canada. Labour Canada. Employment Relations and Conditions of Work : In 1980 the Employment Relations and Conditions of Work Branch was created in the Department of Labour to assume the department's responsibilities in the areas of labour standards, union-management consultation and conditions of work. The Labour Standards Branch was merged into this new Branch. By 1985-1986 the Branch consisted of the Conditions of Work Division and the Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value Division and was also responsible for the Department's Labour Education Program and the Quality of Working Life Program. Enhancing labour-management consultation and co-operation in Canada has been a long term objective of the Department of Labour and of Labour Canada. The responsibility for this type of activity in the Department of Labour has, over the years since 1945, rested with an administrative unit known successively as the Industrial Relations Branch, the Union-Management Relations Branch, the Labour Management Consultation Branch, the Employment Relations Branch and the Employment Branch, the Employment Relations Branch and the Employment Relations and Conditions of Work Branch.
