In addition to the many formerly independent lines in Quebec that came to Canadian National as part of the Grand Trunk and Canadian Northern systems, some were acquired directly by the Government.
With the exception of the Grand Trunk's Riviere du Loup-Quebec line, purchased in 1879, the first such acquisition was the Drummond County Railway (no records at National Archives), purchased in 1899 as part of the Intercolonial's expansion towards Montreal. While the railway property of The Quebec Railway, Light and Power Company (RG30-IV-E-1) a 30 mile electric line running east of Quebec City, was not acquired until 1951, two subsidiaries of this company, The Lotbiniere and Megantic Railway Company (RG30-IV-E-2) and the Quebec and Saguenay Railway Company (RG30-IV-E-3) were purchased in 1920 and 1919 respectively.
The year 1929 saw Canadian National purchase a number of eastern railways. In Quebec there were two main groups. The Quebec, Montreal and Southern Railway Company (RG30-IV-E-4) was a 192 mile amalgamation of former independent lines owned and operated by the Delaware and Hudson system of the United States. The Atlantic Quebec And Western Railway Company (RG30-IV-E-5) and the Quebec Oriental Railway Company (RG30-IV-E-6) were two segments of a single line running through the Gaspe peninsula.
Previously, in 1925, the line of the Rouyn Mines Railway Company (RG30-IV-E-7) had been acquired to service a mining region. In 1949 Canadian National Railway purchased the Temiscouata Railway Company (RG30-IV-E- 8) which linked Riviere du Loup with northern New Brunswick.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the series.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Source:PrivateFormer archival reference no.:RG30-IV-E -
