Sub-series consists of Royal Newfoundland Regiment service files from the First World War.

Shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, the Colony of Newfoundland offered to raise an armed force on Great Britain's behalf. This offer was promptly accepted. Consequently, on 21 August 1914 a call was issued for young men 19 to 35 years of age to enlist in the First Newfoundland Regiment. Responsibility for raising, equipping, transporting and caring for Newfoundland land contingents was assigned to the Newfoundland Patriotic Association (later, the Patriotic Association of Newfoundland). The Association, founded by the Governor to remove the war effort from the highly partisan local politics of the colony, executed its various functions through a series of committees. Only when a National Government was formed in 1917, were the majority of the Patriotic Association's functions taken over by a newly-organized Department of Militia. On 30 October 1914 an initial contingent of 500 men sailed for Great Britain, to be followed by several others. After a period of training and garrison duty in England and Scotland, the Newfoundland Regiment fought at Suvla Bay (Gallipoli), the Somme (Beaumont Hamel and Gueudecourt), at Monchy, and in Flanders. The Regiment was distinguished by the grant of the title 'Royal' in 1917.
