Official correspondence received by the Marine Branch between the years 1868 and approximately 1923 was organized by subject and placed on registry files. Each registry file (or subject) was allotted a number in consecutive order of numerical sequence. In 1923, this registry system was replaced by a departmental subject file classification plan; however, some correspondence continued to be organized under the old registry system right up to the year 1936. Conversely, some correspondence dated prior to 1923 was removed from the old registry system and reclassified under the later subject file plan.
The series contains registry files that range from file 8009 to file 64037. The records cover virtually all aspects of contemporary marine administration, including the following subjects: shipwrecks and shipwreck investigations; pilotage; marine hospitals; lighthouses; foreshore rights and water lots; lifesaving; expeditions; masters and mates; humane establishments; customs; harbour commissions; legislation; signal service; meteorological service; wharves; government steamships; search and rescue; obstructions to navigation, harbours and harbour police; etc.Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the series.Custodial history:All Marine Branch central registry files and correspondence created previous to 1887, with few exceptions, were destroyed by the fire in the West Block of the Parliament Buildings in 1897.Arrangement note:A considerable number of registry files within the range 8009 to 64037 appear to be missing. Some files were reclassified under new file numbers with the advent of the Marine Branch subject file classification system in 1923. Many others, however, were subsequently renumbered under yet another subject file classification system introduced in 1936 by the newly-created Department of Transport. From that year forward, the Department of Transport assumed operational responsibility for all marine matters formerly under the jurisdiction of the old Marine Branch. Documents of the former administration considered to be of operational significance to the new Department were routinely removed from the old registry files and arranged under new subject file numbers.Accruals:No further accruals are expected.Related material:Researchers should consult the Marine Branch subject file classification system series (MIKAN 134556, RG42-C-1), as well as the Canadian Marine Transportation Administration registry files available in the Transport Canada fonds (RG12), for early marine documents dating from the late nineteenth-century (1887) forward.Source:GovernmentFormer archival reference no.:RG42-B-1 -
