53 microfilm reelsLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Series consists of ship registration records compiled in various ports of registry throughout Canada, including first registers, registers of subsequent transactions and mortgage registers. The registers contain information describing the type, size, dimension and means of propulsion for each vessel registered at a particular port as well as ownership details and ultimate disposition. The series also includes central registry files assigned the 9250 block within the Transport Central Registry.

Ship Registration Division : In 1868, all provinces but Ontario were governed by the Imperial Merchant Shipping Act (1854) to regulate the registry of shipping. In Ontario, inland vessels were registered under the Canadian Act of the Consolidated Statutes respecting the registration of inland vessels. Shortly thereafter, the Imperial Merchant Shipping Act was applied to all provinces. The management, control and supervision of the registration of shipping in Canada was administered by the Department of Customs. An order-in-council, dated 18 December 1874, transferred this function to the Department of Marines and Fisheries on 1 January 1875. Despite further amendments to registration system in Canada, especially with the enactment of the Canada Shipping Act of 1934 (24-25 George V, Chapter 44), the function remained consistent. In 1936, the Department of Marine amalgamated with the Department of Railways and Canals to form the Department of Transport, which continued to administer ship registration in Canada. For much of the century, the Ship Registration Division of the Department of Transport maintained the ship registration records after they were transferred to this central agency from the individual ports across the country. The Ship Registration Division is responsible for general administration and policy development with respect to all matters affecting the registration of vessels in Canada.
Under present laws, commercial vessels in excess of 15 tons and pleasure vessels in excess of 20 tons must be registered at a port of registry in Canada. Registration of a vessel proves title, shows ownership and provides the ship with a unique number for identification purposes.
