Sub-series consists of the incoming and outgoing correspondence that formed the greater part of the records maintained by the Railway Committee of the Privy Council. The correspondence covers all aspects of the Committee's activities and its relationship with railways, municipalities, organizations, corporations, and other bodies, as well as individuals. Subjects frequently encountered include accident reports and returns; reports of railway inspections; details of rates, tariffs, and tolls; and correspondence concerning passes, timetables, rules and regulations, and expropriations; complaints; petitions for legislation; and approval for routes, buildings, opening of railway lines for traffic, crossings, and crossing protection. Individual items range in extent from voluminous pieces of correspondence to brief transmittal notes.

As the correspondence was not physically organized by subject or originator, an elaborate system was devised to enable the location of all correspondence relevant to a specific matter. Separate numbering systems were created for incoming and for outgoing correspondence. Each item of incoming correspondence was allotted a consecutive number upon receipt and the correspondence physically kept in this consecutive numerical order is now found in the Letters received sub-sub-series (see RG46-B-II-1). It was also recorded in a register found in the Registers of letters received sub-sub-series, (see RG46-B-II-2, MIKAN 134723, R164-10-0-E). Outgoing letters were also allotted a consecutive number on despatch. No outgoing correspondence has survived, but a record of each letter, along with a summary of its contents, was kept in a register found in the Registers of letters sent sub-sub-series (see RG46-B-II-3, MIKAN 134743, R164-26-4-E).

The journals found in the Journals and journal index sub-sub-series (RG46-B-II-4) were also used as a location device and a subject index to correspondence. Each railway with or about which correspondence was exchanged was allotted a subject number. Both incoming or outgoing correspondence pertaining to that railway was then listed in these journals in chronological order under the subject number allotted to that railway.

Cartographic material, technical drawing: RG46M 934007 includes plans of railway and street crossings, opening or changing lines, new structures such as bridges, and shared facilities.
