Series consists of Atomic Energy Control Board records relating to Operation Morning Light. The series includes correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, schedules of costs, notes from dealings with the USSR etc. from the central registry files (volumes 14-18, 27, 41); newspaper clippings (volumes 19-20); analysis from the Whiteshell laboratory (volume 19); general site reports (volume 20) and analysis reports of specific findings (the ML reports in Volumes 21 to 26).

The cartographic material consists of 2 maps titled Distribution of radioactivity on Great Slave Lake from COSMOS 954 debris, at the scale 1:500 000 and 1:1 000 000, and 17 mosaic air photographs.

Graphic material consists of photographs relating to the search for remains of the Soviet Cosmos 954 satellite, including: aerial views of area searched (photos by EG & G, Las Vegas, Nev.); views of ground search by Canadian Armed Forces (CAF photos); snapshots pertaining to search.

Canada. Atomic Energy Control Board. Operation Morning Light : On 24 January 1978, the Soviet satellite Cosmos 954 re-entered the earth's atmosphere and crashed east of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Under the direction of the Department of National Defence, the AECB was responsible for the retrieval and handling of the recovered materials - known as 'Operation Morning Light'. After the spring thaw, search and recovery operations were continued under AECB direction. Studies of the material were performed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited at their Whiteshell laboratory in Pinawa, Manitoba and by National Health and Welfare in Ottawa. The Department of External Affairs was also provided documentation in order that an official Canadian government claim could be made to the USSR for reimbursement of the costs incurred by the search and recovery operations. While some photographs may be intermixed in the files, during processing, certain maps and photographs had been segregated out during initial processing and been transferred to the (then) National Photography Collection (linked accession with MIKAN no. 11496) and National Map Division (linked accession with MIKAN no. 42654).
