1265 microfilm reels.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Series consists of Records of Entry, a body of Immigration records which document the arrival of individual immigrants in Canada - and hence their legal status under the Immigration Act and other federal laws - from 1865 to present. The Records of Entry consist of several different sub-series of nominal lists, registers and indexes. These were originally created by different offices of the Immigration service, but were later brought together in a single central reference office in Ottawa.
Records of Entry in this series include the ships' passenger manifests or passenger lists, 1865-1935 (RG76-C-1) and the related Manifest Indexes, 1906-1918 (RG76-C-2); the Ship Notifications of Arrival, contemporary ship arrival lists used as finding aids for the ships' manifests (RG76-C-3); the border entry lists, 1908-1935 (RG76-C-5); a general nominal index; and the amendments to the landing records of the period before 1919 (RG76-C-6).Additional information:Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the series.Custodial history:These records were transferred to the National Archives at various times in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's by the Records of Entry Unit (now the Query Response Centre) of the Planning and Program Management Branch, Immigration Program, Canada Employment and Immigration Commission (now Citizenship and Immigration Canada). This office is responsible for maintaining the Records of Entry and using them to provide formal "verifications of entry", other legal proof of immigration status, and similar appropriate uses. Examples of the latter include proof of age and status for pension and medical insurance purposes, information on individuals' where-abouts, and certain anonymized statistical information. After transfer to the National Archives, the records have continued to be heavily used for verification of individuals' immigration status in Canada for pension and medical purposes. They are also used for genealogical research, and as sources of historical information on immigrant group movements and transportation companies. Citizenship and Immigration Canada has retained most of the Records of Entry created after January 1, 1936. For information on immigrant arrivals after 1935 contact the Query Response Centre, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, 300 Slater Street, 2nd Floor, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 1L1.Dates of creation note:This microfilm was produced by the Department during the 1950's and 1960's under microfilm authority M6-62. The originals were then destroyed.Accruals:Further accruals are expected.Related material:Some of the Chinese Immigration records (RG76-D-2) also appear to have been used as Records of Entry by the Immigration service.
